Foods: Apricots, berries, grapes, cherries
Nutrient inhibiting factors: Processing, heat, cooking, oxygen, light
  • Most flavonoids provide antioxidant activity and help prevent cellular damage
  • Greatly enhances the immune system
  • Flavonoids protect against high blood pressure by blocking the action of the enzyme angiotensin
  • May provide protection from cataracts, especially in diabetics
  • Can protect against skin infections, bacteria, and fungus
  • Isoflavones such as genistein, found in soy products and some legumes, can block enzymes that cause tumor growths in uterine, breast, and prostate cancer, reducing the risk of ovarian and breast cancer
  • Can protect against recurrent nose bleeding, easy bruising, and platelet aggregation
  • May also be required to prevent the development of leukemia and hemophilia
  • Provide antiviral activity; may help in cases of HIV and herpes by retarding the activity of other infections that attempt to develop
  • Flavonoids, in addition to vitamin C and iron may protect against common colds
